In the United States about 30 million young people participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million of those young people will incur an injury significant enough to cause loss of time in participation of sport. John W. Powell, PhD, ATC, researcher for the National Athletic Trainers Association states that recent studies indicate the best way to minimize the risk of injury in young athletes is to provide participation opportunities that are under the blanket of a well-designed injury prevention program. Although sports injuries cannot be entirely eliminated, consistent and professional evaluation of yearly injury patterns can provide focus for the development and evaluation of injury prevention strategies.
